Getting Started with Green Smoothies- Simple Smoothie Recipe

In the spirit of encouraging you on your real food journey, I wanted to post today about green smoothies.  Green smoothies are an excellent way to fill in some gaps in your diet with minimal effort.  They are highly customizable according to your preferences and can be made in a matter of minutes.  Oftentimes, it is really easy to get kids to drink smoothies as a way of getting more nutrients into them as well!

Some of the best ingredients to keep on hand for your smoothies:

Greens of some kind (spinach is my favorite)

Organic fresh or frozen fruit (I use a lot of strawberries or other berries)

Bananas

Juice (orange is good, freshly juiced is best, followed by organic) or raw milk (water can be used in a pinch)

Hemp Hearts (high in protein and omegas)

Flaxseed (high in omega 3 and fiber)

Coconut Oil (organic, unrefined)

Kombucha (full of probiotics, helps to detox the body)

Spirulina Powder (high in protein and a plethora of vitamins and minerals)

Today, I made a smoothie (while I oil pulled!) that I thought I would share with you.  This is a very basic and sweet smoothie, so you can ease yourself into super green smoothies!

Ingredients:

1 Organic Banana

4 Organic Strawberries

1 Cup Raw Milk

Handful (1/2-1 Cup) Organic Kale

3 TBS Hemp Hearts

2 TBS Organic Flaxseed

2 Cups Ice

Blend all ingredients together until smooth.  The flaxseed and hemp hearts tend to be a little crunchy in the finished product, so you want to try to get them as blended as you can.  (I’m working on saving up for a Vita-Mix, but will have to put up with my smoothies being a little crunchy til I get one!)

As you can see, this smoothie is not super green.  It’s a good place to start if you mentally have a hang up with drinking a totally green smoothie! Although, I will note that my boys love when their smoothie is very green… we call it dinosaur juice 🙂

This is a very basic smoothie recipe.  If you want to start adding other things, good things to try are a TBS of coconut oil, an ounce or two of kombucha, or a couple of extra veggies like carrots or celery.
